Green Munch Bunch

Green Munch Bunch

Goal

to increase the number of vegetarians and vegans (henceforth veg*ns) on college campuses and to decrease the levels of meat and other animal product consumption

Summary

This movement will decrease campuses’ carbon footprints due to food.  The community in this movement will gain greater awareness for the consequences of food choices and be inspired to take collective action in pursuit of sustainable eating. A 2009 report issued by the Worldwatch Institute, “Livestock and Climate Change,” found that livestock and animal byproducts account for 51% of annual CO2-equivalent emissions. Additionally, according to David Pimentel at Cornell University, grassfed beef requires more than 75 times as much water to grow per kilogram as even high water plant foods like rice. Traditionally, students tend to become veg*n individually, not as groups, and without the aim of effecting larger-scale societal change. Furthermore, students already interested in sustainability and aware of the impact of meat and dairy consumption often do not pursue veg*nism due to the perceived futility of individual choices when made without the commitment of a more sizeable community.

The Green Munch Bunch will encourage behavioral change by normalizing plant-based diets through the use of social media. By shifting veg*nism from the private realm to the public ethos, we will promote plant-based diets through incremental steps and the creation of a support network of veg*n peers.
